Steps for Installing E-mail Encryption

You may want to print this checklist for future reference.  This process should take 10-15 minutes over a 2 day period.

Currently, the e-mail clients supported are:

  • Outlook 2003
  • Outlook 2007
  • Entourage 2003
  • Entourage 2008
  • Outlook Web Access (OWA) (requires Internet Explorer (IE))

1.   Install the KU Root CA Certificate
(http://www.technology.ku.edu/ca/install/index.shtml).
Download and install the KU Root certificate.  The root certificate is used to verify your identity.

2.   Request your digital credentials or authorization for credentials
(http://www.technology.ku.edu/ca/install/step2.shtml).
The credentials include all the information you will need to sign and encrypt documents.

The page displayed by this link depends on whether or not you are already authorized to request digital credentials. If you are it will take you directly to the credentials request page. If not, it will take you to a page where you can request authorization.

Text Box: Wait to receive your digital credentials or authorization message.  You will receive an e-mail from "kuca@ku.edu" within approximately one business day. If you were requesting authorization you will need to use a link in this email to submit a credentials request. After making the actual credentials request you will receive email with a link to download your credentials. When you have received the credentials e-mail, return to this page to complete the installation process.  Please do not delete this e-mail.  You will need this e-mail for the installation process.

3.   Install digital credentials
(http://www.technology.ku.edu/ca/install/step3.shtml).
The credentials are installed and maintained on your machine.  If you use more than one computer, you should consider using an e-token.

4.   Set up your mail client to work with the credentials
(http://www.technology.ku.edu/ca/install/step4.shtml).
Credentials can also be used to digitally sign other types of documents.
