What is SPSS?
SPSS is modular, tightly integrated, full-featured statistics software for the analytical process - planning, data collecting, data access, data management and preparation, analysis, reporting, and deployment. More information about the software and its capabilities is available on the SPSS.com web site.
How is SPSS licensed at KU?
Information Technology maintains an enterprise license for SPSS for Windows and a 115-seat license for SPSS for Macintosh that allows departments to get SPSS at greatly reduced prices. Current higher education pricing for SPSS Base, Advanced, and Regression software from SHI is $1812 per installation.
SPSS licenses are valid from August 1 through July 31 of the following year. Licenses need to be renewed annually.
How do I purchase SPSS?
In order to more equitably share the cost of SPSS among all the departments that use the software and to better allow departments to manage SPSS licenses used by their faculty, staff, and student employees, activation codes will no longer be distributed directly to users through the IT website.
Instead, departments will need to place orders for SPSS software needed by their users and manage the activation codes generated for those orders. In order to fulfill the university's obligations to track where the licenses are installed, departments will need to maintain the following information about each SPSS installation:
- Machine information (name, ID, or IP)
- Type of machine (KU-owned or personal)
- Name, Title and Department of person using the license
- Software licensed (Windows, Macintosh, individual add-on)
- Activation code used
This information can be tracked in the Excel spreadsheet containing the activation codes that will be sent to departments after ordering.
What does SPSS Cost?
SPSS for Windows: $20 per installation, including lab machines
SPSS for Macintosh: $102 per installation The 115 licenses of SPSS for Macintosh have already been reserved by those departments that ordered it last year, so no additional licenses are available from IT.*
What add-on modules are available?
Orders for add-on modules have been completed for this renewal period. Check with your department for availability.
Where else can I purchase SPSS and SPSS add-on modules?*
Students may purchase or lease the SPSS Student Edition – a basic version containing the core SPSS components – or the SPSS Graduate Pack – a more advanced version containing more components – for a reduced student rate from an SPSS-authorized online retailer*.
Faculty using the SPSS/PASW software for teaching purposes may obtain the SPSS Faculty Pack, available exclusively from e-academy.com, containing SPSS for Windows or Macintosh, plus 11 add-on modules. Amos, Sample Power, Data Entry Builder, and Data Entry Station are not included in the faculty pack.
Faculty and Staff using SPSS software for research purchases may purchase or lease the software through SHI or order from an SPSS-authorized online retailer.
What versions of SPSS are available?
KU's SPSS license agreement allows us to make software and activation codes available for SPSS Base, Advanced Models, and Regression Models – version 16.0 and version 17.0 for Windows and versions 16.0 and 17.0 for Macintosh.
KU can no longer get codes to activate SPSS v.15 for Windows or v.13 for Macintosh, so users of that software should make arrangements to move to v.16 or v.17 as soon as possible.
